Thousands of people suffer each year with hunger, homelessness, abandonment, drug and alcohol abuse and other impoverishing situations. Through the multiple programs at CityTeam Ministries, the organization’s purpose is to bring hope to the poor in body and spirit by passionately transforming the lives of individuals, their families and communities throughout the world.

Since 1957, CityTeam has been registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-denominational Christian organization serving the poor and homeless in six cities across the United States (San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Philadelphia, Portland, and Seattle) and now 30 countries around the world. CityTeam provides shelter, meals, emergency food boxes, showers, clean clothing, furniture, individual and group counseling, anger management courses, GED preparation, job skills, long term recovery programs for men and women, youth after school programs, summer camp, medical and dental services and other essential care.

In 1997, CityTeam broadened its scope by launching CityTeam International. In 2007, its name was changed to NewGenerations International, a division of CityTeam, to emphasize the centrality of disciples making disciples. This division focuses on training, equipping and coaching national leaders in 30 countries around the world. NewGenerations International partners care for hurting people with compassionate services by providing food, purified water, medical services, education and other essential care as the first link in developing relationships that serve as the basis for reproductive church planting.

CityTeam’s Disaster Response Team started in October 1989 by responding to and sheltering the victims of the Loma Prieta earthquake that hit Northern California. Since responding to both the Tsunami in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, CityTeam has developed a unique four-phase framework that specializes in the long-term recovery process in the aftermath of major disasters, helping communities who are unable to recover on their own. Since Hurricane Katrina, CityTeam has been able to rebuild 175 homes with the help of volunteers from all across the county. The work in Mississippi continues today as CityTeam helps families rebuild their homes to make them habitable, as well as through celebration recovery and church planting groups operating within the community. Also, CityTeam has trained and equipped staff in each regional location to be prepared for future disasters and offers a variety of training courses to equip local volunteers. CityTeam is in the process of becoming a member of the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (NVOAD).

For the fiscal year ending August 31, 2007, CityTeam’s worldwide programs accounted for more than 75% of the total operating expenses.

CityTeam is supported by contributions from individuals, corporations, churches and foundations. They strive to maintain the highest level of financial accountability at all times. Their commitment to their donors is to spend every dollar wisely and keep their financial affairs open and above reproach. CityTeam is committed to using donor support in specific areas in accordance with the donor’s request. CityTeam’s Board of Trustees continues to operate an active Finance and Audit committee; the organization’s financial statements are audited annually by an independent accounting firm. Moreover, CityTeam is a charter member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) and abides by all its standards of responsible stewardship.
